Sophos Endpoint Security awarded prestigious VB100 award

Largest comparative test of anti-virus products on latest Windows 7 platform, featured 43 anti-virus product

Award for detecting all the in-the-wild viruses without false alarming, Sophos outperformed all big names

MUMBAI / BANGALORE, India – December 15, 2009 – The latest edition of Virus Bulletin magazine has described its recently published investigation of 43 anti-virus products on the Windows 7 platform their "biggest month of testing ever", producing an exhaustive 27 page report examining the detection abilities of different security solutions.

Not only does the December 2009 edition of Virus Bulletin award Sophos Endpoint Security the prestigious VB100 award for detecting all the in-the-wild viruses without false alarming, but Sophos also achieved a perfect 100% score against worms, bots and polymorphic malware. This meant that Sophos outperformed a number of other products which failed to detect 100% of the viruses in the wild.

Even more impressive, from Sophos' point of view, was Sophos' performance in Virus Bulletin's RAP ("Reactive and Proactive") test, helping users form a better impression of the heuristic and generic proactive detection capability of security software - in particular how well products perform against malware that appears after vendors have submitted their products to Virus Bulletin for testing.

Yes, that's right - this was the malware which emerged once Virus Bulletin had our software and had frozen its ability to update itself. In other words, Virus Bulletin was testing each product's ability to proactively detect unknown malware.

In this test, harder than any other, Sophos achieved a higher ranking than any other product tested with 73.2%.



Virus Bulletin commented on Sophos's performance:

"Detection rates were particularly good in the RAP sets where some excellent figures were noted, especially in the proactive set; we observed enormous numbers of detections being covered by a relatively tiny number of unique identities, so it seems like Sophos’s focus on generic coverage is paying dividends."

As a comparison, McAfee and Symantec scored 53.98% and 17.66% respectively in that same proactive test.

With the business ecosystem changing ever so rapidly, if a company is not continually moving forward, it too will become a dead stock. Organisations need to look at moving on or reinventing themselves from time to time.

The crux of a company’s proactive efforts to stay in front of the change curve, and its response to the inevitable change that comes, is largely a result of the company’s culture of innovation. The companies that visibly are doing well, even during the downturn that we are just coming out of, are the ones that presented innovative ideas, products, services and/or experiences to their customers. I can’t think of getting a chance of earning easy money anymore!

December’s Harvard Business Review published a survey study covering more than 3,000 executives and 500 innovative entrepreneurs which identified the five skills that enable the best innovators to soar above everyone else. The article posits that what innovators have in common is their ability to actively observe the world around them and put ideas and information together in unique combinations. This ability to connect disparate qualitative and quantitative input is the key to innovators’ ability to think outside the box and develop the paradigm changing innovation we have seen in the technology and services spaces.

Here are the five skills that the study says drives innovation. How many of them are actively encouraged as part of your company’s culture?

  • Associating: The ability to connect seemingly unrelated questions, problems or ideas from different fields.
  • Questioning: Innovators constantly ask questions that challenge the common wisdom. They ask “why?”, “why not?” and “what if?”
  • Observing: Discovery-driven executives scrutinize common phenomena, particularly the behavior of potential customers.
  • Experimenting: Innovative entrepreneurs actively try out new ideas by creating prototypes and launching pilots.
  • Networking: Innovators go out of their way to meet people with different ideas and perspectives.

What are the consequences of failing to innovate and adapt to changes in the ecosystem we operate in?

In consulting services, the innovation and resulting evolution needs to occur in quarters, months if required, certainly not years, to ensure survival. Without the innovations, a company ceases to move forward, or ceases to evolve as its ecosystem evolves, and it gets plucked off of its perch by hungry competitors.

Do we have a choice? I think I’ll take another look at those five skills that drive innovation again.

R&M unveils new cabling solutions for high-speed data networks

Presents its newly developed Cat. 6A module to the industry, catalyzing opening up of new dimensions in copper cabling

BANGALORE / MUMBAI / NEW DELHI, India – November 21, 2009 – The Swiss cabling specialist Reichle & De-Massari (R&M) today unveiled the new cabling solutions for high-speed data networks in Bangalore today. Mr Martin Reichle, CEO, R&M and Mr Laurent Amestoy, President – APAC, R&M unveiled the latest R&M Cat 6A Module in a product launch event held in Bangalore, India. The Swiss cabling specialist showcased how broadband infrastructures can be efficiently set up today for computing centers and city networks, as well as office and residential buildings.

R&M had selected Bangalore in India as the venue for presenting its newly developed Cat. 6A module to the industry. Cat. 6A, with the A written as a subscript in accordance with the future ISO/IEC standard, is a key for opening up new dimensions in copper cabling. Cat. 6A module are used in the kind of high-performance data networks found in computing centers and in commercial and administrative buildings.

With the advent of 10Gigabit Ethernet over copper twisted pair cabling, new classes of cabling standards were introduced. EIA/TIA released the Cat. 6A standard in February 2008 and ISO/IEC the Class EA channel standard in the same timeframe. Unfortunately, these two standards do not define the same performance, leading to confusion in the market. This confusion is compounded when looking at the components, especially the connecting hardware. EIA/TIA and ISO/IEC specify different performance for the modules, but the component naming is very similar. Therefore special care must be taken or else users will not obtain the performance they expect.

ISO/IEC Class EA offers the highest performance available using RJ45 technology. In practice, this higher performance translates to higher operational reliability which minimizes errors. In addition, the life of the cabling infrastructure is maximized. Today, a Class EA channel is the highest performance channel available based on the prevalent RJ45 technology. It not only ensures support for the 10 Gigabit Ethernet application, but it also extends the life of the cabling and ensures higher operational reliability. For these reasons, R&M recommends installing a Class EA channel in new installations.

If interoperability is a requirement, then it is important to choose Cat. 6A connecting hardware. Cat. 6A modules simply cannot guarantee the higher Class EA performance. Although the Cat. 6A component standards are taking longer, it will be worth the wait for the added performance the cabling system will achieve, which will translate to less headaches for the user.
