Thousands of Facebook Users Hit by Video Attack, Sophos Reports

Following links to 'sexiest video ever' risks adware infection

MUMBAI / BANGALORE, India – May 17, 2010 – IT security and data protection firm, Sophos, is warning Facebook users to be wary following a video attack on users this weekend designed to infect computers with adware. Thousands have been hit by the attack which posted a fake video to profiles claiming to be the ‘sexiest video ever’.

The malicious posts, which seemingly came from users' friends on Facebook, read—

this is without doubt the sexiest video ever! :P :P :P
Candid Camera Prank [HQ] Length: 3:17

The messages were accompanied by what appeared to be a movie thumbnail of a woman on an exercise bicycle wearing a short skirt.

However, Sophos experts warn that clicking on the movie's thumbnail doesn't play a video, but takes victims to a Facebook application that tells them they don't have the right player software installed, and tries to trick them into installing revenue generating adware.

"You may want to watch a sexy video, but you're more likely to end up being plagued by pop-up advertising," warned Graham Cluley, Senior Technology Consultant at Sophos. "Not only is adware being installed on your computer, but the rogue Facebook application is posting the same message to all of your friends' accounts. It's no surprise that your friends might click to watch the movie when it looks to all intents and purposes that you are the person who has sent it to them."

Facebook users hit by the attack are advised not to click on the links or allow the Facebook application to run.

"If you fell victim to this attack, scan your computer with up-to-date anti-virus software, change your passwords, and review your Facebook application settings and remove whatever application was installed during this attack," continued Cluley. "70% more Facebook users are reporting being attacked by malware via the site in the last year, and the problem only seems to be getting worse. Social networking users need to learn not to fall for simple but effective social engineering tricks like this in future."

Security Scare over Facebook Friend Suggestions

MUMBAI / BANGALORE, India – May 14, 2010 – IT security and data protection firm, Sophos, is urging Facebook users not to panic, after alerts were posted by thousands of users warning of a new virus sending out large numbers of friend suggestions.

A typical warning posted across the site reads—

VIRUS WARNING: ANYONE WHO HAS GOTTEN A TON OF FRIEND SUGGESTIONS BE CAREFUL! IT IS A VIRUS! IF YOU ACCEPT THEM THEN YOUR ACCOUNT WILL SEND OUT ABOUT 85 TO SOMEONE ELSE!!! WARN YOUR FRIENDS NOW! This is a new virus that is sending requests to spread. DO NOT ACCEPT FRIEND SUGGESTIONS AT THE MOMENT!

The warnings have gained momentum in recent days, against a backdrop of increased concern and high profile media reports about privacy and security controversies on Facebook.

However, Sophos advises, there is no evidence that the multiple friend suggestions (some people report having received over 500) are due to a computer virus infection.

"This security scare is spreading like petrol on fire at the moment across the Facebook network, frightening people that their computers might have been compromised by hackers just when there are many headlines questioning how well Facebook protects its users," said Graham Cluley, Senior Technology Consultant for Sophos. "Rumors of a virus can propagate at breathtaking speeds on social networks, and can be hard to stamp out. Just one person who has been left in the dark about the facts can kick start them again."

Cluley explains that Facebook has changed the way in which handles friend suggestions, now sending notifications to both the person you're suggesting a friend to and also the suggested friend too.

"Imagine that you are Tom, and you think that your friend Dick should become Facebook friends with Harry. You visit Dick's Facebook profile, scroll down to where it says "Suggest friends for Dick" and choose Harry's name. Your suggestion that Dick should become friends with Harry doesn't just go to Dick, but it will also now go to Harry as well," explained Graham Cluley, Senior Technology Consultant at Sophos on his blog. "Presumably Facebook has made this change in order to encourage more users to interconnect."

Furthermore, Facebook can automatically suggest friends based upon many factors, including shared networks, work and education information and friends imported using Friend Finder.

"Put simply Facebook can send friend suggestions to other users based upon email addresses that you may have imported into the site from your email address book," continued Cluley. "What many people do not realise is that even if you didn't add everyone you imported from your address book as a Facebook friend, Facebook remembers the contacts you imported from Outlook, Gmail, Hotmail etc. and can use them to make future recommendations."

Spammers Use iPhone 4G as a Bait to Harvest Private Information

‘Too good to be true’ free iPhone claims spammed out via email and Twitter

MUMBAI / BANGALORE, India – May 13, 2010 – IT security and data protection firm, Sophos, has warned internet users that spammers are using the lure of a free next generation iPhone to gather email addresses and other personal information.

Sophos has intercepted email spam inviting recipients to sign up to test, try and keep the much-predicted (but as yet unannounced) next version of the iPhone, which is being dubbed the ‘4G’ by the media.

Separately, Sophos researchers have also uncovered a coordinated campaign on Twitter, using avatars of sexy young women, pumping out adverts to users promising a ‘free iPhone 4G’ in an offer that is claimed to end today.

However, clicking on the links provided in either spam campaign takes users to a website which demands private information such as name, address, email, contact details and date of birth.
"Even though it hasn't been officially announced by Apple, and may not be released for a couple of months, there is a lot of buzz on the internet about the iPhone 4G," said Graham Cluley, Senior Technology Consultant for Sophos. "In their excitement, some internet users might blindly hand over their personal information in the belief that they will get a preview version of what will be one of 2010's hottest gadgets. But, being careless with your data risks exposing yourself to more spam in future and costly identity theft."

Sophos recommends that internet users adopt a healthy level of scepticism over ‘too-good-to-be-true’ iPhone 4G offers.

"Apple is a company obsessed with secrecy about its upcoming products you have to ask yourself, would Apple really be leaking products out to the general public for testing before they have officially announced its existence? Security is tight around the iPhone 4G, the editor of the Gizmodo blog even had his house raised after he claimed to have got his hands on a prototype," continued Cluley. "Sometimes people's common sense goes out the window when they're faced with the possibility of a sexy new gadget and that's bad news for personal security and privacy."

Dirty Dozen Spam Relaying Countries revealed by Sophos

China dramatically disappears from list of worse spam-relaying nations for the first time

MUMBAI / BANGALORE, India – April 28, 2010 – IT security and control firm Sophos has published its latest report into the top twelve spam relaying countries, covering the first quarter of 2010. The United States of America continues its unpopular reign as the king of spam, relaying more than 13 percent of global spam, accounting for hundreds of millions of junk messages every day.

However, most dramatically, China - often blamed for cybercrime by other countries - has completely disappeared from the so-called "dirty dozen", coming in at 15th place with responsibility for relaying just 1.9% of the world's spam.

The top twelve spam relaying countries for January to March 2010 are as follows—

1 United States 13.1%

2 India 7.3%

3 Brazil 6.8%

4 South Korea 4.8%

5 Vietnam 3.4%

6 Germany 3.2%

7 United Kingdom 3.1%

8 Russia 3.1%

9 Italy 3.1%

10 France 3.0%

11 Romania 2.5%

12 Poland 2.4%

13 Others 47.3%

"All eyes aren't so much on which countries are on the list, but the one which isn't. China has earned itself a bad reputation in many country's eyes for being the launch pad of targeted attacks against foreign companies and government networks, but at least in the last 12 months they can demonstrate that the proportion of spam relayed by their computers has steadily reduced," said Graham Cluley, Senior Technology Consultant at Sophos. "A new dirty 'gang of four' - South Korea, Brazil, India and their ringleader USA - account for over 30% of all the spam relayed by hacked computers around the globe."

Spam accounts for a staggering 97 percent of all email received by business email servers, putting both a strain on resources and wasting a huge amount of time to lost productivity. Used largely as a method for selling counterfeit or illicit goods such as fake pharmaceuticals, luxury watches and false diplomas, virtually all spam comes from malware infected computers (called bots, or zombies) that are controlled by 'botherder' cybercriminals.

Computer users can unwittingly allow their PCs to become part of a botnet in a number of ways, including clicking on malicious links that are frequently contained within the spam messages that the botnets are used to distribute. The only way for users and administrators to reduce the risk of being compromised is to run anti-spam and anti-malware protection and ensure all software and hardware is up to date with security patches.

"Countries such as the USA would do well to remember that cleaning-up infected PCs in their own back yard will be an important step in fighting cybercrime. Furthermore, we all shouldn't forget that if no-one bought products sold via spam there would be a lot less incentive to send junk email," explained Cluley. "Computer users should not just protect their computers from threats like malware and spam; they should also pledge to never ever buy anything advertised via spam."

By continent, Asia continues to dominate in spam, with more than a third of the world's unsolicited junk email relayed by the region. Although the US remains the top offender by country, North America as a whole has reduced its spam throughput since last quarter, dropping from second to third place. The breakdown of spam relaying by continent is as follows—

January to March 2010

1 Asia 33.7%
2 Europe 31.2%
3 North America 16.9%
4 South America 14.7%
5 Africa 2.6%
6 Others 0.9%

Sophos recommends that companies automatically update their corporate virus protection, and run a consolidated solution at their email and web gateways to defend against spam and viruses.

Three separate cooling chambers provide optimum isolated cooling zones for hard drives, graphics cards, and power supply. All of these are cooled by three included 140mm fans, with room for up to four more 120mm fans, including the triple 120mm radiator friendly top exhaust panel. There are isolated cooling chambers for cool-running devices. Unique cable routing holes guarantee a clean and clutter-free installation. There is a provision for up to seven fans for very high cooling potential. Tool-free optical drive installation makes building a system faster than ever.

Hackers exploit McAfee False Alarm to spread Scareware Attack, Sophos Reports

System administrators at risk of infection from fake anti-virus traps

MUMBAI / BANGALORE, India – April 23, 2010 – IT security and data protection firm, Sophos, is warning that hackers are exploiting a problem with McAfee's anti-virus product that has caused hundreds of thousands of computers around the world to repeatedly reboot themselves, effectively becoming inoperable.

McAfee accidentally issued a detection update yesterday which mistakenly detected a harmless Windows file, svchost.exe, as "W32/Wecorl.a", and caused critical problems on affected PCs.

Hackers, however, are compounding the problem by using blackhat SEO (search engine optimisation) techniques to create webpages stuffed with content which appears to be related to McAfee's false alarm problem - but are really designed to infect visiting computers.

Sophos has identified malicious webpages which appear on the first page of Google results if users search for phrases associated with McAfee's false positive.

"It's bad enough if many of the computers in your company are out of action because of a faulty security update, but it's even worse if you infect your network by Googling for a fix," explained Graham Cluley, Senior Technology Consultant for Sophos. "These poisoned pages are appearing on the very first page of search engine results, making it likely that many will click on them. If you visit the links you may see pop-up warnings telling you about security issues with your computer. These warnings are fake and designed to trick you into downloading dangerous software, which could result in hackers gaining control of your corporate computers or the theft of your credit card details."

In the past, hackers have used the same techniques to infect users hunting for information about Sandra Bullock's marriage problems, Tiger Woods' car crash, and the death of celebrities such as Michael Jackson and Natasha Richardson.

"SEO poisoning is one of the fastest-growing areas of cybercrime today," explained Cluley. "The hackers know that users turn to search engines when they are looking for the latest news on a breaking story, and are lying in wait to infect the unwary."

Sophos recommends that businesses protect their users by running a web security solution which scans every webpage and link clicked upon for malware and criminal activity.

Adaptec MaxIQTM SSD Cache Performance Solution Increases Performance for Japan’s Largest Server Farm

A.T. WORKS Gains Significant Performance Increases for Web Applications

BANGALORE, India — April 12, 2010 — Adaptec, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADPT), the global leader in I/O innovation, today announced that its MaxIQ SSD Cache Performance Solution has been implemented by A.T. WORKS, Inc., Japan’s premier Internet services provider and manager of the country’s largest server farm.

A.T. WORKS turned to Adaptec’s MaxIQ SSD Cache Performance Solution after searching for an affordable solid state disk-based (SSD) Web and database server solution for those customers dissatisfied with performance offered by SATA or SAS-based hard disk drive (HDD) arrays. Ideal for data centers running applications with high “read” operations such as Web serving, file serving, and databases, the A.T. WORKS solution uses customized Intel® SSDs used as cache with Adaptec MaxIQ SSD Caching Software, plus Adaptec RAID 2405 and Adaptec RAID 5405 Unified Serial® controllers to create high-performance hybrid arrays made of SSDs and HDDs. The implementation of the Adaptec MaxIQ solution at A.T. Works doubled the performance of SATA HDD RAID 1 configurations with static Web pages, and significantly outperformed SAS HDD-only configurations with dynamic Web pages.

We had been looking for a cost effective way to add SSD components to our servers for quite awhile, but SSD capacity is less than that of an HDD and the relative cost per gigabyte is much higher,” said Takuji Ikeda of A. T. WORKS’ Engineering Division. “With Adaptec MaxIQ, we’ve been able to create a hybrid solution of SSDs and HDDs to meet growing customer demands for large capacity, high-performance storage solutions at an affordable price.”

After seeing the results, A.T. WORKS now encourages its customers currently using Adaptec Series 5 and Series 2 Unified Serial® storage controllers to upgrade with Adaptec MaxIQ. With 9,000 hosted specialized servers, A.T. WORKS relies on Adaptec MaxIQ, and the included Adaptec Storage Manager™, a centralized interface to enable, disable, and configure cache levels, to provide the best performance possible for its customers.

About Adaptec MaxIQ SSD Cache Performance Solution
The Adaptec MaxIQ SSD Cache Performance Solution addresses the needs of I/O intensive data centers by creating high-performance hybrid arrays – storage arrays that use both SSDs and HDDs – to deliver up to five times the I/O performance of HDD-only arrays and up to 50 percent savings in capital and operating costs.

The Adaptec MaxIQ solution features SSDs used as cache, plus MaxIQ SSD Caching Software. The software introduces a patent-pending Learned-Path algorithm that alleviates the bottleneck that can occur between server processors and hard drives by copying frequently-read data directly into an optimized SSD cache pool for faster retrieval in future requests. MaxIQ also updates “hot” cached data on subsequent writes to the same blocks to maximize storage efficiency.

Sophos Strengthens its Data Protection Strategy with SafeGuard Enterprise 5.50 and SafeGuard Easy 5.50

Breadth of latest SafeGuard solutions reinforces Sophos’s position as a strategic partner committed to the strongest data security and the lowest total cost of ownership (TCO)

MUMBAI / BANGALORE, India – April 11, 2010 – IT security and control firm Sophos today announced the release of version 5.50 of Sophos SafeGuard ® Easy and Sophos SafeGuard ® Enterprise, the industry’s first and only data protection product line designed to address the broadest array of customer requirements, implementation options and long-term data protection plans. This latest advancement furthers Sophos’s commitment to provide customers with a new approach to comprehensive security and data protection that reduces cost and complexity.

Leading the Industry in Product Depth and Expertise

In the 2009 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Mobile Data Protection, the analyst firm noted, "Every company must include mobile data protection in its IT operations plan." Sophos has delivered upon this message by offering two distinctly different data protection offerings that are ideally built upon the same award-winning platform.

Sophos SafeGuard ® Enterprise 5.50, the industry’s most advanced, multi-layered endpoint data security encryption and data leakage prevention (DLP) solution, is ideal for customers who are most concerned with the breadth of Sophos’s central policy management capabilities and the ability to secure desktops, laptops, removable media and other portable devices. The SafeGuard Enterprise engine complies with most recent standards and modern platforms to optimally support current and future needs of enterprise customers in securing their infrastructure.

For customers primarily addressing regulatory requirements such as Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS) Sophos SafeGuard® Easy 5.50 is an ideal, simplified full disk encryption solution for laptops and PCs. Given its shared engine platform, Safeguard Easy customers can seamlessly upgrade to SafeGuard Enterprise without the need to re-encrypt the company’s endpoints.

Leading the Industry in Lowest TCO
The new versions of Sophos SafeGuard solutions introduce several new capabilities that ultimately aim to further reduce the customer’s TCO, such as—

  • Forgotten full disk encryption passwords can now be securely recovered with the Local Self Help functionality. Users simply answer questions they created during the initial enrollment to retrieve their password - bypassing the help desk completely, with the added benefit of lowering help desk costs.
  • New Server Installation Wizard enables administrators to install the Sophos SafeGuard Enterprise server and client components, and required Microsoft server components, faster with accurate configuration settings.
  • Administrator Accounts enhancements allow administrators to audit and perform essential tasks on PCs during encryption rollouts. Managing security officer roles and groups has also been made easier especially for large deployments.
  • New administrator access options and updated policy controls provide a variety of deployment alternatives for both centrally- and non-centrally managed environments- from a few PCs in remote offices to over 100,000 PCs including those in service provider type deployments. IT administrators can easily rollout encryption across heterogeneous environments ensuring users are protected at all times regardless of their location.
  • The latest Sophos SafeGuard solutions fully support Windows 7 64-bit support - including Sophos SafeGuard Enterprise modules — Device Encryption, Partner Connect, and Management Center. SafeGuard Enterprise Management Center and Server also support Windows Server 2008R2 (64-bit).
The new SafeGuard Enterprise Server Installation Wizard allows us to install the server components and Management Center more quickly and efficiently – that’s a big plus,” said Vojta Borovian, Senior Desktop Engineer at LECG, a global management consultancy and business advisory services firm. “The improved management features allows us to easily upgrade to the new version by exporting policies, such as device protection from the existing 5.40 Management Center and importing into the 5.50 Management Center. We liked the new Administrator Accounts features as it gives the option of assigning administrative rights to groups and allows them to easily perform essential deployment tasks on PCs while ensuring that end-user access to PCs is auditable for compliance. Overall, we found SafeGuard Enterprise 5.50 to offer enhanced, easy-to-manage data protection, which allows our IT team to be more efficient.”

No Additional Cost
All existing Sophos SafeGuard Enterprise and Sophos SafeGuard Easy customers who are covered by the maintenance contract and have the appropriate license are entitled to receive the latest version at no additional cost. Sophos SafeGuard Easy customers interested in upgrading to Sophos SafeGuard Enterprise 5.50, please contact your Sophos account manager.

95% of Facebook users oppose privacy policy changes, Sophos poll reveals

MUMBAI / BANGALORE, India – April 9, 2010 – A survey released today by leading IT security company, Sophos, reveals that controversial changes Facebook is planning to make to its privacy policy are being universally slammed by users.

The study, conducted amongst 680 readers on Sophos's website and Facebook page, found that an overwhelming 95 per cent of the respondents think the privacy changes are ‘a bad thing’.

Only two per cent of the respondents polled said that they would support the change, with the remaining three per cent saying they did not understand what changes Facebook was proposing.

In March 2010, Facebook proposed a number of controversial changes to its privacy policy, paving the way for it to share personal information with ‘pre-approved’ third-party websites. This means that, if you're logged into Facebook and then visit a third party website, that site will be able to access the following:

- your name
- your profile picture
- your gender
- your friends and connections
- your user ID
- any content shared using the ‘Everyone’ privacy setting

Consequently, users may find that when they visit a website it already knows who they are; their date of birth; where they live; and who their friends are. All, without ever having given the site explicit permission to access that data. According to Facebook, only a small number of pre-approved sites will be offered this feature, and users will be given the option to disable the feature."

As a result of a rise in public consternation around these changes, Facebook published a response which sought to justify its position and to reassure users that the company would only offer personal data to ‘carefully selected partners’. It also outlines that partners would be ‘required to provide an easy and prominent method’ for users to opt out directly from their websites and delete any cached personal data.

"The results of this poll send out a very clear message to Facebook - its users aren't happy. Most Facebook users still don't know how to set their Facebook privacy options safely, finding the whole system confusing and long- winded," said Graham Cluley, Senior Technology Consultant at Sophos. "The onus should not be on Facebook users to ‘opt out’ of this new feature but to ‘opt in’ - making a conscious choice to engage, rather than having to make a conscious decision to decline."

"Once again, it feels like online privacy is being eroded by stealth. Too many websites are chipping away at their members' privacy and security, potentially exposing their personal data to third parties that were never in the equation when they first signed-up for the service," continued Cluley. "Facebook would be doing its hundreds of millions of users a service if it thought again about this new privacy policy."

Adaptec MaxIQ SSD Caching Solution with Microsoft Technology Demonstrates Dramatic I/O Acceleration

SSD & Storage Controller Combo Delivers 3.2 Times Performance Increase in an OLTP Workload Simulating a Demanding Brokerage Firm

BANGALORE, India, March 29, 2010 — Adaptec, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADPT), a global leader in data center hardware and software storage solutions, today revealed benchmarking results for its MaxIQ™ SSD Cache Performance Solution. Integrating an advanced solid state storage control technology developed by Microsoft Corp., the solution is licensed and has been further enhanced by Adaptec. Using a simulation of a dynamic brokerage application environment, Adaptec consistently demonstrated a 3.2 times increase in system I/O (input/output) performance over the best results of a similar system without SSD caching. An increase in performance of 3.2 times can translate into a savings in capital and operating costs of up to 70 percent.

These benchmark tests provide data center managers working with high-traffic transactional workloads with quantifiable evidence that storage controllers utilizing SSD caching in SSD/HDD High-Performance Hybrid Arrays can dramatically increase system performance,” said Jon Flower, Vice President of Advanced Technology, Adaptec. “Accelerating throughput, particularly during peak transactional periods, along with reducing capital and operating costs, minimizing system footprint, and consuming less energy are critical issues for data center managers today. Adaptec MaxIQ SSD Caching solutions were designed to address all of these issues.”

This application is a database application benchmark which models a brokerage firm with customers who generate transactions related to trades, account inquiries, and market research. The brokerage firm in turn interacts with financial markets to execute orders on behalf of the customers and updates relevant account information. Simulating a 50,000 user environment, Adaptec MaxIQ consistently achieved system I/O performance that was 3.2 times greater than the best results for a hard disk drive-only system without SSD caching.

When our datacenter team came up with some innovative ideas around using solid state devices as read caching devices, we determined it made good sense to license these advances to Adaptec because Microsoft itself doesn’t sell these types of products,” said David Kaefer, General Manager of Intellectual Property Licensing at Microsoft. “By collaborating through licensing, Adaptec customers benefit from a product that delivers impressive performance and cost savings over alternatives in the market.”

Adaptec’s MaxIQ SSD Cache Performance Solution creates High-Performance Hybrid Arrays (HPHAs) by pairing tuned 32GB Intel® X25-E Extreme Solid-State Drives, used as high-performance cache, with Adaptec’s MaxIQ SSD caching software and standard hard disk drives. The hybrid SSD/HDD solution provides I/O intensive data center and cloud computing customers with maximum I/O performance, up to 70 percent savings in capital and operating costs and cost-effective scalability, all without disrupting existing operations.

R&M makes FTTH access easy with FO Splice Outlet

The solution for the Indian market focuses on the use of high-capacity data transmission, multimedia, and Internet TV in large residential complexes too.

BANGALORE, India – March 24, 2010 – Swiss cabling specialist Reichle & De-Massari (R&M) is promoting the expansion of broadband infrastructure with Fiber To The Home (FTTH) through its easy-to-install FO splice outlet. The solution from R&M is targeted at large and medium enterprises. It allows system and network integrators to extend fiber optic broadband all the way to the last access point. The solution for the Indian market focuses on the use of high-capacity data transmission, multimedia, and Internet TV in large residential complexes too.

The FO splice outlet is a wall outlet with four ports and integrated splice storage for optical fibers. The ports can be fitted with two LC duplex, SC or SC-RJ connector sockets. The R&M outlet also accommodates a standardized Cat. 5e or Cat. 6/RJ45 connection module, allowing the hybrid use of fiber optic and copper cabling.

The splice storage unit can be mounted and opened with ease reducing the overall time required for installation. The construction ensures that the bending radius of the individual fibers does not fall below 15mm, thereby avoiding losses in the signal transmission. R&M recommends that customers use innovative G.657.A optic fibers with optimized bending characteristics. Even at small bending radii, they exhibit only minimal attenuation losses (dB); in this case, 0.1 dB at a radius of 15 mm.

With a surface of 88 by 88 millimeters, the new FO splice outlet fits in standard Swiss outlet frames. The front plate is 14 millimeters deep; the adapter, 34 millimeters. The solution is ideal for retrofitting existing buildings, where space for additional installations is often at a premium and lean, easy-to-install systems are required. The socket can be sealed and labeled. Colored dust caps can be employed to mark the individual ports. The adapters point downward to prevent any danger from laser beams.

The FO splice outlet blends well with the R&M copper and fiber optic home cabling systems already available in the market. Inspan launches Corsair Padlock 2, Password based USB drive

First time in India, Security for sensitive and confidential data, Prevents Data Theft

CHENNAI / BANGALORE / MUMBAI, India – March 23, 2010 – Inspan Infotech, one of the largest IT distribution companies for motherboards and hardware components, announced the launch of Corsair Padlock 2 – a highly secured USB drive for protecting confidential and sensitive data. This drive works similar to ATM cards and is unlike the other such drives from various brands which work on software based passwords. If the drive is lost or stolen one need not worry about the important data being accessed by wrong hands.

This 8GB USB drive is compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux systems. Password protection can be scaled up to 10 digits for locking the drive. In case the PIN code is forgotten, the user can restore the USB drive to factory settings by clearing the data on it so that drive can be used again.

The USB key has 256-bit encryption on stored data and is just plug and play like the regular USB. The drive is housed in an extremely durable shock-proof rubber to prevent it from physical damages, a feature of all high end Corsair products. Moreover, Corsair offers Life time Warranty on this making it a fantastic product to choose from.

The product is extremely useful in segments where data protection is of paramount importance like Defence, R&D establishments, BFSI etc.

Corsair has addressed this problem very well by introducing padlock based USB drive” said Sudhir S, Managing Director of Inspan Infotech, ”Corsair Padlock 2 will create a segment of its own in USB drives. Hackers Exploit Oscars to Spread Scareware Attack, Sophos Reports

MUMBAI / BANGALORE, India – March 8, 2010 – IT security and control firm Sophos is warning that hackers are exploiting interest in last night's Oscar film awards ceremony to infect the computers of unsuspecting computer users.

Movie-loving internet users are searching the web for information and gossip about the Academy Award winners, making phrases like "Oscars Winners" one of the most commonly searched for phrases on the internet. However, using SEO (search engine optimisation) techniques, hackers have created webpages stuffed with content which appears to be related to The Oscars - but are really designed to infect visiting computers.

"Many people won't have had the chance to watch The Oscars live on television, and so turn to the internet for news on whether their favourite film won an award or not - but careless clicks can lead to a malware attack," explained Graham Cluley, Senior Technology Consultant for Sophos. "Hackers have created poisoned pages that appear on the first page of search engine results, tempting users to click on them. However, if you visit the links you can expect to see bogus warnings that your computer is infected with viruses, that try and trick you into downloading dangerous clean-up software or handing over your credit card details. Scareware or fake anti-virus attacks like this are an increasingly common weapon in the armoury of cybercriminal, jumping on the coat tails of breaking news stories."

Sophos detects the attacks Mal/FakeAVJs-A and Troj/FakeAV-AXS. Users are advised to be cautious about the links they click on and ensure that they are running up-to-date anti-virus protection.

"Cybercriminals lover launching SEO attacks because they've proven to be so successful at hitting unsuspecting users," explained Cluley. "Visiting mainstream news websites for breaking news might be a lot safer for users than stumbling across dangerous pages carrying traps laid by hackers."

Twitter Users Struck Again by Phishers Asking "This you????"

Hackers recruiting hijacked accounts to launch cyber crime campaigns

MUMBAI / BANGALORE, India – February 25, 2010 – IT security and data protection firm, Sophos, is warning about the latest wave of cyber crime spreading across Twitter - a phishing attack designed to steal login details and hijack accounts.

Messages asking "This you????", followed by a link to a bogus Twitter login page, have caused such a scare on the micro-blogging network that the phrase is currently a hot trending topic on the site.

For the benefit of millions of Twitter users, Sophos has made a YouTube video, which journalists and bloggers are free to embed on their own websites, demonstrating the attack: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFVqfgnZV6M

The attack, which is the latest in a storm of phishing attacks that have occurred on Twitter since the weekend, is designed to steal passwords and could use hijacked accounts to spread money-making spam campaigns, steal identities, and distribute malware.

The "This you????" messages are accompanied by clickable links which take unsuspecting users to a fake Twitter login page. Users, who are tricked into believing they might see a picture or information about themselves, may enter their username and password without thinking about the possible consequences.

"Twitter users have been battered with phishing attacks in the last few days, all taking advantage of people's curiousity," said Graham Cluley, Senior Technology Consultant at Sophos. "But if you click on the link and enter your details you could be taking your online identity and handing it over on a plate to hackers. They can then take your username, email address and password and not only use it to spread more attacks via Twitter - they can also try your credentials at many other websites - potentially opening your other online accounts to abuse. Anyone hit by this kind of attacks must change their passwords immediately."

"Crime on social networks is on the rise, we saw a 43% rise in the number of people reporting being phished via such sites in the last 12 months, and the way things are looking that figure can only go up," explained Cluley. "As the social networks grow in size and power there will be more and more hackers attracted to commit crimes via them."
